Lost Accounts and Lessons Learned: A Journey in the Travel Industry

Overview

This case study plots the rise and fall of three travel agencies: Qartbah Travels, Decent Travels, and Rajputana Travel, through Muhammad Bilal’s journey within the travel industry. In 2003, Muhammad quit his stable job at Golden Hawk to set up Qartbah Travels in Lahore. Although it became an overnight hit, financial mishandling and pricing strategy put it into bankruptcy in 2005. Hesitant this time of repeating his previous blunder, he launched Decent Travels in 2006 with a concentration on innovation and service to the customers. But without tamed staff freedom, the pilfering by the employees, and his foray outside into Sudan generated too much liability, which made it go into bankruptcy in 2016. Muhammed took his loss and carried his burden. Muhammad tolerated financial loss. At the end of 2018, he started traveling to Rajputana with cost-control measures and debt repayment. Operations were affected due to the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. He recovered financially from this lull as he started overseas operations in 2021.

Learning Objectives

The learning objectives of this case study come across through Muhammad Bilal’s entrepreneurial journey. The case has tried to address financial management implications cash flow management and service cost management that failed Qartbah Travels – and, most importantly, it describes debt management implications that made losses due to the strategic errors at both stages of cases, respectively: 9.9 million PKR by Qartbah Travels
and 88 million PKR by Decent Travels. The study underlines entrepreneurial resilience, which shows Muhammad’s will to rebuild after failures, especially through Rajputana Travel. Lastly, it focuses on effective decision-making strategies like the implementation of contracts, employee oversight, and external auditing for better financial and
operational control in future ventures.
